Elaine in the gallery

“Does selling successfully through galleries feel like something other people just know how to do? Do you wonder how artists and makers get their work into galleries—or why your own gallery success has fizzled out?”

Gallery Elaine

“Your cheerleader, champion, and guiding light”

For over eight years, I’ve been sharing insider tips in talks and workshops, and in 2023, I turned that knowledge into an online course—so that more artists and makers can find their own gallery success.

This year the course has a fresh new look and even more fantastic content to help you confidently navigate the gallery world.

What You Can Expect

Across four packed modules, you’ll get practical insights, expert advice, and plenty of handy downloads to guide you every step of the way.

Plus a live Zoom ask the Gallery Session where you can ask me anything!

Module 1: Preparation

In our first module we start with the big questions:

  • What can a gallery do for you?
  • Is gallery representation the right path for your creative business?
  • What should you expect when working with a gallery?
  • How do galleries find artists and makers, and what are they looking for?

This module gives you the foundation you need to understand a bit more about how commercial galleries work and what to expect when you work with them.

Module 2: Polish

Your Work – How do you know if your creative practice is ready for a gallery? We’ll go through the essential questions to ask yourself and fine-tune your collection so you’re pitching with confidence.

Your Business – Yes, you’re an artist, but you’re also a business. And galleries are businesses too. This section ensures you have everything in place, from pricing and record-keeping to professional photography, your artist statement, website, and social media presence.

Your Brand – You are more than just your work—you’re a brand. In a world full of talented artists and makers, how do you stand out? We’ll explore what makes you unique and how to shape a strong, memorable brand identity.

Module 3: Pitching and Promotion

Now that you’re prepared, it’s time to get out there. This module is all about identifying the right galleries for you and approaching them with confidence.

  • How to research and target the right galleries (and avoid wasting time on the wrong ones!)
  • The best way to make first contact (plus a customisable sample email for your pitch)
  • How to time your approach, interpret gallery responses, and follow up effectively
  • How to keep promoting yourself while you’re pitching

Module 4: Professional Progress

Getting a ‘yes’ from a gallery isn’t the final destination—it’s just the beginning. This module prepares you for the realities of working with galleries, covering:

  • What galleries expect from you (and what you should expect from them)
  • How to manage relationships with multiple galleries while selling independently
  • What to do when things don’t go to plan (because, let’s be honest, that happens!)
  • Knowing when—and how—to part ways professionally
  • How to become the kind of artist or maker galleries love to work with

By the end of An Insider’s Guide to Gallery Success, you’ll know exactly when your work, business, and brand are in the right place to approach galleries.

More importantly, you’ll have the skills and confidence to build strong, lasting professional relationships that make you a gallery’s dream artist.
